Cooking over a fire pit with a fork and a butter knife gets old quickly. The Kings BBQ Tool Set is the simple fix: long stainless steel tongs, a slotted spatula and a scraper brush that live together in a pouch. We paid $20 for it and used it on a few trips in the Hunter Valley, on the Kings Camp Fire BBQ Plate over our Kings fire pit. They’re handy tools, but quite bulky.

Tongs and spatula
These are the two you’ll use for every meal. The tongs are long, with scalloped ends that grip a chicken thigh or a sausage without squashing it, and the wire loop at the handle end locks them closed when you’re done.
The spatula has a wide, slotted blade, so fat drains off when you lift something from the hotplate. It’s stiff enough to get under food that has stuck a little.
The length is what matters over a fire. With handles this long, your hands stay well back from the heat, which you notice straight away on a fire pit, where the flames don’t stay politely under the plate.

The scraper brush
The third tool is for cleaning up. It has a block of wire bristles for scrubbing the grill and a flat steel edge on the front for scraping a hotplate. After cooking, a scrape and a brush while the plate is still warm gets most of the mess off before it sets.
Having this in the set is handy, because a brush is the BBQ tool people forget to pack.

Pouch, size and weight
Everything goes into a black drawstring pouch, which keeps greasy tools away from the rest of the kitchen box. The pouch is a thin fabric, so it’s a cover more than protection.
The packed set is about 48 cm long and weighed around 660 g on our scale. That’s the catch with this set: it’s quite bulky. If you have enough space while travelling and a family to feed, tools this size are very handy, and in a caravan or camper trailer they’re easy to find room for. If you like to keep everything compact, they’re not so great.
We travel with just the 4WD, so space is tight, and after a few trips in the Hunter Valley we swapped them for smaller options. We now cook with a pair of titanium tongs, which take a fraction of the room. There are more compact tools in our guide to the best camp cooking utensils.

Conclusion: Kings BBQ Tool Set
The Kings BBQ Tool Set is a simple, useful kit: stainless steel tongs, a slotted spatula and a scraper brush with long handles, in a pouch that keeps them together. They’re handy, and great if you have the space and a family to feed. They’re also quite bulky, which is why we swapped them for smaller options after a few trips. I paid $20 for the set. If room isn’t a problem, it’s very good value for cooking on a fire pit, a hotplate or a park BBQ.

Yes, if you have the space. For $20 you get the three tools you need at a fire pit or hotplate, and they’re handy when you’re cooking for a family. If you like to keep your kit compact, look at something smaller instead: we now use a pair of titanium tongs.
