At camp, the toilet roll always ends up damp, dirty or lost at the bottom of a tub. A camping toilet roll holder fixes that: the roll stays covered, and you hang it up where you can find it. This no-name holder does it for about $15, and it’s surprisingly good and sturdy. We used it for a few months on weekend trips and liked how many ways there are to clip or hang it. In the end, though, we swapped it for the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Outhouse, which seals completely.

What’s in the box
A round fabric holder for one toilet roll, with a zip-around lid, a metal grommet in the centre of the lid and a side flap with velcro over the paper outlet. A webbing strap lets you hang it from a branch, a tent pole or the car. It’s a no-name holder: ours has a “Cool Camp” patch, and on Amazon it’s sold under the Puchen name. Don’t let that put you off, though: it’s surprisingly good and sturdy. Ours is black; it also comes in khaki and army green. We paid about $15.

Weight and build
Empty, the holder weighs 104 g on our scale. It’s made of Oxford cloth with a zip-around lid, and it takes one toilet roll.

Loading and hanging it
The lid zips all the way around, so a full roll drops straight in and the empty one comes out just as easily. A metal grommet sits in the middle of the lid. Hang it by the strap and the paper comes out of a slot at the side, under a flap that closes with velcro, so the roll stays covered between uses. The strap and loops give you plenty of ways to clip or hang it: from a branch, a tent pole or the car. What it can’t do is seal: the flap keeps the roll covered, but it isn’t closed off like a roll-top bag.

Or the Ultra-Sil Outhouse?
We’ve also reviewed the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Outhouse, a lightweight waterproof toilet roll holder with a roll top. The Outhouse is far lighter and fully waterproof; this no-name holder costs less, feels sturdier and has a zip lid and a covered outlet. We ended up using the Outhouse: we like that it seals completely and hangs from its built-in cord.

The same manufacturer also makes a paper towel holder in the same style, with the same black fabric, patch and webbing strap. We have both: the paper towel holder for the camp kitchen and this one for the toilet roll. Both have lots of ways to clip or hang them, so both rolls stay clean and off the ground.

Conclusion: Camping Toilet Roll HolderConclusion
This camping toilet roll holder is a simple no-name bag, but surprisingly good and sturdy, that keeps the toilet roll clean and covered at camp. It hangs from a branch or a pole by its strap, the lid zips open to change the roll, and the paper comes out under a velcro flap. We liked how sturdy it is and how many ways there are to hang it, but in the end we swapped it for the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Outhouse, which seals completely and hangs from its built-in cord. For about $15 it suits car campers, 4WD tourers and families who want the toilet roll clean and easy to find.

For $15, yes, if you want a sturdy holder with lots of ways to hang it. We swapped ours for the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Outhouse ($25) because it seals completely.
