A hard-shell rooftop tent takes up most of the roof rack, which leaves the question of where the awning goes. On our Kings Grand Tourer Lite, the answer is the tent itself: it has an accessory track along the side, and this Kings bracket kit bolts the awning onto it. I paid $50 for the kit.

Build quality
The brackets are 304 stainless steel with a brushed finish, and the bolts, nuts and washers are stainless as well. That matters for something that lives on the outside of the car in rain, dust and salt air. The bends are clean, and the set is really sturdy.

Fitting it
The bolt heads slide into the accessory track on the side of the Grand Tourer Lite, so the threads stick out where you need them. The brackets go on over them, and the other side bolts onto the track of the awning. The slotted holes give you a bit of room to line everything up, and the nyloc nuts lock in place once they’re done up. You’ll need your own spanner or socket for the nuts.
I fitted the awning on my own, and it took a good hour. It’s doable, but two people is better: one holds the awning in place while the other does up the bolts, and it goes quicker.

Almost a year with our OCAM Wingman awningAlmost a year on
We use all three brackets to hold our OCAM Wingman 270° awning on the side of the tent. A 270° awning is big and heavy, and it puts a lot of load on its mounts when it’s open in the wind. The brackets have kept it in place for almost a year now with no issues.

Kings says the kit takes awnings up to 2.5 m long, including its own 270° King Wing. The brackets also work for other gear on the accessory track, like shovel and jack holders or lights. Read more about the tent in our Kings Grand Tourer Lite review.
