We wanted a good light at the back of the Prado, for cooking, packing and sitting around at night, and the Stedi Micro Touch has been a great one. It sits on the side of our rooftop tent and has white and amber LEDs, which you switch and dim with a touch, so you can mix the two into exactly the light you want. We paid $79 for it.

What’s in the box

The Stedi Micro Touch is a compact 7.8 inch LED light bar, only 2.6 cm tall and 300 g, with 12 OSRAM LEDs and 1,400 lumens. Six of the LEDs are a 5700K pure white and six a 1500K warm amber, each colour with its own touch button. The housing is aluminium with a polycarbonate lens, it’s rated IP68 and it runs on 10 to 30V DC. In the box are two side brackets, M8 and M6 bolts with nuts and washers, and male and female Deutsch connectors. It comes with a 2-year warranty.

Mounting it

Our Kings Grand Tourer Lite rooftop tent has channels along its sides, and that made mounting the light easy. We slotted four T-bolts into the channel at the back of the car and mounted the light on its side brackets, so it sits on the tent itself and lights up the area behind the Prado.

From there we ran the cable underneath the rooftop tent to the corner where the rear door opens, and led it back inside along the door trim. Inside, it connects to our 12V control panel on a simple rocker switch. The light comes with a male and a female Deutsch connector: one is already fitted to the light’s cable, and the loose one we wired onto our own cable, so the light clicks on and off and can come off without cutting anything. There’s no switch or wiring loom in the box, so plan for those.

Touch controls and dimming

The white and the amber LEDs each have their own touch button, one on either side of the light. A tap switches that colour on or off, and if you keep your finger on the button, it dims the light up and down. That’s the clever part: because each colour dims on its own, you can mix more amber or more white until the light is just right. Between them, the light is dimmable anywhere from a warm 1500K amber to a 5700K pure white.

Amber on its own is soft and doesn’t draw as many bugs to the light as bright white does at night. White on its own is the one for packing up or finding something in the back of the car.

Our favourite mix

We find an almost even balance between the two gives a nice warm light at the back of the car. It’s bright enough to cook and sort gear by, without the harsh glare of pure white, and it makes the back of the Prado feel like part of camp.

The 120° wide flood spreads the light across the whole area behind the car rather than throwing it far, so it’s a camp and work light, not a driving light. It draws only 12 W, about 1.15 amps at 12V, so it’s easy on the battery on a long evening.

Micro Touch 7.8 vs 13.9

Stedi also makes the Micro Touch in a 13.9 inch version. It has the same white and amber LEDs, touch controls and 120° wide flood, just twice as many LEDs, so it’s about twice as bright and draws twice the power. For the back of our car the 7.8 inch is plenty and fits neatly in the tent’s channel; the 13.9 inch suits a bigger area, like under an awning or across a wide canopy.

Micro Touch vs Micro V2

Stedi’s Micro V2 lights have the same 2.6 cm micro profile, but only one colour each: you choose a white (5700K) or an amber (2700K) light when you buy it. They’re cheaper, and the 26 inch version gives you a long bar of white light for under an awning. If you want to switch between white and amber, or mix the two like we do, the Micro Touch is the one.

Conclusion: Stedi Micro Touch Flood Light

The Stedi Micro Touch is a great light for the back of the car. It’s compact, bright at 1,400 lumens and has white and amber LEDs in one housing, with touch controls that switch and dim each colour, so you can mix exactly the light you want. Ours sits in the channel on our rooftop tent on four T-bolts and runs off a rocker switch on our 12V panel. You need your own switch and wiring, but at $79 it’s good value. It’s the best dual colour light in our camping lights guide and our 12V accessories guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do the touch controls on the Stedi Micro Touch work?
There's a touch button on each side of the light, one for the white LEDs and one for the amber. A tap switches them, and if you keep your finger on it, the light dims up and down. That way you can mix more amber or more white.
How bright is the Stedi Micro Touch?
1,400 lumens from 12 OSRAM LEDs, according to the box: six white (5700K) and six amber (1500K). It's a 120° wide flood, made for lighting up camp rather than the road ahead.
How much power does the Stedi Micro Touch draw?
12 W, about 1.15 amps at 12V or 0.57 amps at 24V, so it's easy on a camping battery.
How did you mount the Stedi Micro Touch on a rooftop tent?
Our Kings Grand Tourer Lite has channels along its sides. We slotted four T-bolts into the channel and mounted the light on them at the back of the car.
What voltage does the Stedi Micro Touch run on?
10 to 30V DC, so it runs on a 12V or 24V system. Ours runs off our 12V control panel on a rocker switch.
What comes with the Stedi Micro Touch?
The light, two side brackets, M8 and M6 bolts with nuts and washers, and a male and a female Deutsch connector: one is fitted to the light, and you wire the other onto your own cable. There's no switch or wiring loom, so you need those yourself.
