A sleeping bag doesn’t have to be fancy to keep you warm. The Wanderer Single Hooded Sleeping Bag is a pretty simple bag from BCF: a 0°C rectangular bag with a hood. It cost us $80, it’s warm enough even on colder nights, and we’ve used it on many trips over the last year.
What’s in the box
A single rectangular sleeping bag with a hood, packed into a stuff sack. It has a 179T polyester shell, a soft 160T polyester lining in blue and 400 g/m² of hollow core fibre insulation, and it’s rated to 0°C comfort, -2°C limit and -12.3°C extreme. The label calls it the “Singe” sleeping bag; it’s the single.

Warmth
It’s warm enough, even on colder nights. The 400 g/m² fill is a medium fill, and together with the hood it keeps the warmth in around your head and shoulders.

The hood
The hood is our favourite part. It has a drawstring that you can pull tight around your face on a cold night, and loosen again when it warms up. The label calls it a shoulder baffle locked hood.

Materials and zipper
This is where you can tell it’s an $80 bag. The materials are quite basic: the shell and lining are plain polyester, and the zipper and the fabric feel a bit cheap. Nothing has failed, though. We’ve used it on many trips over the last year, and it holds up well; it just doesn’t feel premium. The zip has anti-snag protection, and a hook-and-loop tab at the top holds it closed. At the foot are two fabric loops for hanging the bag up: after a trip you can hang it to air out or dry after a wash, and between trips it’s better to store it hanging or loose than squashed in its stuff sack, which flattens the fill over time.

Size and weight
At 220 by 80 cm, it’s a full-size bag. It weighed 1,795 g on our scale in its stuff sack, and the sack is about 40 × 24 × 24 cm, so it’s a bag for the car, not a hiking pack. It’s machine washable, which helps after a dusty trip.

Three temperature ratings
Ours is the 0°C version, but the same hooded bag comes in three ratings, all 220 × 80 cm with the same 179T shell and 160T lining. The 7°C has a lighter fill for summer and warm nights, and the -7°C a heavy fill for winter, at almost twice the weight and packed size.

Wanderer vs other bags
We’ve reviewed three other bags for car camping. The Adventure Kings Hooded is the closest: another simple hooded bag, bigger, with a heavier fill. The Coleman Pilbara C-5 is the warmer pick, a cotton bag with a fleece liner, and the Sea to Summit Boab the lighter one that packs much smaller. The Kings rating is the maker’s own; the others are EN/ISO comfort ratings.
