A camp table is one of those things you don’t want to give up much room for, but you miss it the moment you’re eating dinner off your lap. The BCF Lightweight Aluminium Roll Up Table is a compact answer: a 70 × 70 cm table at a proper dining height that packs into a bag about the size of a camp chair. We paid $50 for ours and used it on a recent trip to the Hunter Valley, where it worked great.

Packing and storage
This is the best thing about the table: it’s awesome and compact to store. Packed, it’s a 73 cm long bag that’s only 14 × 12 cm across, so it slides in next to the fridge, along the side of the drawers or on top of the rest of the gear. In a full car, that matters more than anything else about a table.
At 3.1 kg it’s also light to carry from the car to the campsite or to a picnic spot.

Setting it up
There are three parts in the bag: the leg frame, two loose cross bars and the rolled-up top. The frame folds out like a concertina. The two cross bars clip into holders on top of the frame, and the slat top rolls out over them and hooks onto the ends of the cross bars.
The cross bars have holes on the underside that sit over the holders, and because the holes face down, you can’t see them while you’re lining a cross bar up. A simple fix: I’ve made small marks with a permanent marker on top of each cross bar, right above the holes, so I can see I’m aiming right when I clip them onto the frame.
It’s a few more steps than a table that folds out in one piece, and you have three parts to keep together. In return, it packs much smaller.

Size and height
The table stands 70 cm high, which is a decent height: you can pull up a camp chair and actually enjoy dinner properly, instead of leaning down to a low table.
The 70 × 70 cm top has enough space for a couple, or for a small family at a pinch. It’s a dining table more than a camp kitchen, though. When we’re preparing food or have the stove out, we combine it with the folding table on the rear door of the car, so the cooking happens there and this table stays free for eating.

Build quality
The frame and the top are both aluminium, which keeps the weight down to 3.1 kg and means it won’t rust if it’s packed away damp. The legs are cross-braced on all four sides, and the slats of the top sit side by side to make a flat surface.
BCF rates the table to 30 kg. That’s plenty for plates, drinks, a lantern and a small stove, but it’s lower than some of the other tables we’ve tested, so it’s not one for heavy gear.

It packs into a 73 cm bag, weighs 3.1 kg and sets up to a proper 70 cm dining height, with a 70 × 70 cm top that’s enough for a couple or a small family. Yes. $50 for a full-height aluminium table that takes up this little room in the car is good value. If you need more bench space for the stove, pair it with a second table.
