A camp table has one main job: give you somewhere to cook and eat at a comfortable height. Many compact tables are so low that dinner becomes annoying. The Spinifex Square Aluminium Folding Table strikes the right balance: it folds very compact, it’s light, and it still gives you a decent surface at a proper 69 cm height. We love it: we’ve used it for over a year, and it came with us on our big three-week trip from Sydney to Adelaide, Melbourne and back.

What’s in the box
A square folding camp table with a slatted aluminium top on a 19 mm aluminium frame. The top rolls up, the frame folds, and everything goes into a carry bag. It’s 70 × 70 cm and 69 cm high, weighs 2.75 kg and takes up to 30 kg. We paid $50 at Anaconda.

What’s in the bag
The frame, the cross bars and the rolled-up slatted top all go into one carry bag of 69.5 × 18 × 8 cm. Together they weigh 2.75 kg.

Setting it up
This is the trade-off for packing so small: you do need to put it together. You fold out the frame to exactly the right size so the two poles fit over the top and lock it in place, then clip the slatted top on. It can be a bit fiddly.

At camp
Because it folds so compact and is so light, we just throw it in the back. The 70 cm square top is a decent surface to cook and eat on for two, and the height is the best thing about it: our Kings Essential Camping Chairs sit at just the right height for it. After more than a year of use, including that three-week trip, it’s still going strong. Under heavy use it can feel a bit wobbly or less rigid, though, so it’s not the table for heavy loads.

Spinifex or BCF Roll Up?
We’ve also reviewed the BCF Lightweight Aluminium Roll Up Camp Table, a very similar square roll-up table for the same price. The Spinifex is a touch lighter and lower; the BCF packs shorter.
