Black Perry Lookout has breathtaking views, and it’s such an easy stop, as it’s just on the side of the road: you pull off the Snowy Mountains Highway, walk a few metres and you’re standing on a platform out over the trees. We stopped here late on a Saturday afternoon in early September 2025, on the drive north from Yarrangobilly Caves to our camp for the night at Jounama Creek Campground.

About Black Perry Lookout
The lookout sits beside the highway near Talbingo Mountain, in the north of Kosciuszko National Park. From the platform you look out over ridge after ridge of forest, with Black Perry Mountain and the Bogong ranges in view.
There are two signs on the platform. The first shows the view with the names of the mountains and creeks on it, so you can work out which one is Black Perry. It also tells you that Tumut is 35 km away. The second is about the rock and the wilderness: Black Perry is made of a rare rock called skarn, and from here you look out over about 10,000 hectares of the Bogong Peaks Wilderness.

Getting There
The lookout is on the Snowy Mountains Highway, 45 km south of Tumut and 84 km north of Adaminaby. A brown road sign marks the turn-in. The highway is sealed all the way, so any car can get here, in any weather.

Parking is a strip of bitumen beside the road. There are no marked spaces, but there was plenty of room when we pulled in.

The Viewing Platform
From the car it’s only a few metres to the lookout. First comes a paved area with bench seats, then a metal walkway with handrails that leads out to the fenced platform. It’s flat and step-free the whole way, so it works with a wheelchair or a pram.

The platform extends out over the treetops, and the view opens up across the valleys to the ranges on the horizon. Late in the afternoon the low sun picked out every ridge.

That’s all there is here: parking, benches and the platform. There are no toilets, no water and no picnic tables. There is some phone reception. The lookout is always open, though it can close in bad weather, snow or high fire danger.

Recommended Gear for Black Perry Lookout
A pair of binoculars is worth having for picking out the peaks named on the sign. There’s no water here, so carry your own water storage, and with benches but no tables, some coffee gear and a couple of camping chairs make it a proper break.
