Fitzroy Falls Lookout (NSW) Review

On this page

Fitzroy Falls is the kind of stop that makes a long drive home better. You park, walk 150 metres along a boardwalk, and you’re standing at the top of a waterfall that drops nearly 100 metres into a deep, forested valley. We stopped here late on a Sunday afternoon in early September 2025, on the drive back to Sydney after our last night at Jounama Creek Campground.

About Fitzroy Falls

Fitzroy Falls is at the northern end of Morton National Park, in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The falls form where Yarrunga Creek pours over the edge of the sandstone escarpment. From there the water falls nearly 100 metres into the gorge and runs on through the Yarrunga Valley towards the Shoalhaven River.

The main lookout is a fenced platform right at the top of the falls. A track runs along each rim of the gorge from there, the East Rim and the West Rim, with more lookouts along the way.

Quick facts

Getting There

The falls are on Nowra Road, between Robertson and Nowra, and the road is sealed all the way, so any car can get here. A brown sign marks the turn 300 metres before the visitor centre, and the car park is right at the centre.

Parking costs $4 per vehicle per day, paid at a machine in the car park that takes cash and cards. The visitor centre is open from 9am to 4pm daily. We arrived just before four, when the centre was nearly closed, so plan to come earlier if you want to look around inside or have a coffee. The lookouts and tracks stay open after the centre closes.

The Lookout at the Top of the Falls

From the visitor centre, an elevated boardwalk follows the creek for 150 metres to the lookout. It’s step-free the whole way, so it works with a wheelchair or a pram.

The platform sits on the edge of the escarpment, right beside the point where the creek goes over. You look along the orange sandstone cliff, with the water falling away next to you and the valley opening up behind it.

Lean on the railing and look straight down, and you see the water hit the boulders far below and run off into the forest.

Along the West Rim Track

The first lookout shows you the top of the falls. To see the whole waterfall, keep walking along the West Rim track. It passes more fenced platforms, and from those you look back across the gorge at the full drop: one long fall off the cliff, then a second, shorter one below it.

The same platforms look down the Yarrunga Valley, a deep V of forest between sandstone cliffs, with flat-topped mountains on the horizon.

If you have the time, you can walk further. The full West Rim walking track is 3.5 km return and takes one and a half to two and a half hours, ending at Renown lookout. The East Rim and Wildflower tracks are 6.7 km return, two to three hours, with Warragong lookout 1.25 km in for a side view of the falls. Both are rated Grade 3. We only had an hour, and that was enough for the main lookout and the first platforms along the West Rim track.

Facilities

For a lookout, Fitzroy Falls is well set up. There’s a visitor centre with a shop and a cafe, The Burrow Café, as well as accessible toilets, two accessible parking spots and bench seats, and a picnic area with barbecues near the falls. Phone reception is patchy. The park itself is always open, though it can close in bad weather or high fire danger. Dogs and other pets aren’t allowed anywhere here, at the lookout or on the walking tracks, because it’s all inside the national park. Leave the dog at home for this one.

Summary

Fitzroy Falls is one of the easiest big views in New South Wales: a waterfall of nearly 100 metres, 150 metres from the car park along a step-free boardwalk. Walk on along the West Rim track for the view of the whole fall and the Yarrunga Valley. It costs $4 to park, and the visitor centre closes at 4pm, so come a bit earlier in the day than we did.

Worth the money?Value 94/100

Yes. For $4 a car you get one of the best waterfall views in New South Wales, and the first lookout is an easy walk for anyone.

A pair of binoculars is worth bringing for the birdlife in the valley and the mountains named on the sign. For the walk along the rim, carry a water bottle like the YETI Rambler 26 oz Straw Bottle; there are more in our guide to the best camping water bottles. With barbecues and picnic tables on site, a small cooler like the Coleman 30 Can Soft Cooler makes it a lunch stop. And since the visitor centre closes at 4pm, some coffee gear in the car means you can still have a coffee with the view if you arrive late, as we did.
