Cold water is easy at home and hard at camp, where a plastic bottle left in the car is warm by lunchtime. An insulated bottle fixes that, and the Hydro Flask 32 oz Wide Mouth with Flex Straw Cap is one of the best known: 946 ml of stainless steel with a straw you flip up to drink. We paid $80 for ours, in the Cactus colour.

Insulation
The bottle has two stainless steel walls with a vacuum between them, which Hydro Flask calls TempShield. The vacuum stops heat getting in from outside, and it keeps our drinks chilled for up to 24 hours. It also means the outside doesn’t sweat, so the bottle stays dry in a bag or on a car seat.
The wide mouth helps here too: large ice cubes drop straight in, which a narrow-necked bottle won’t let you do, and refilling is simple.

The Flex Straw Cap
The cap is what makes this version different. A short spout folds down flat into the lid and flips up when you want a drink, so you get fast-flowing sips with one hand without unscrewing anything. The mouthpiece snaps closed again when you’re done. That’s handy while driving or with your other hand full.
Inside, a long straw reaches to the bottom of the bottle, so you drink upright without tipping it. Hydro Flask describes the cap as leakproof when the spout is folded down.
Two limits to know about. The straw cap is only built for cold or room-temperature drinks, not for hot liquids. And the flip-up mouthpiece is exposed: outdoors it can pick up dust or dirt in a way that a fully covered lid doesn’t, so give it a wipe at a dusty campsite.
Handily, the wide-mouth thread is interchangeable with other Hydro Flask lids, so you can swap in a different one for coffee or tea.
A flexible handle runs over the top of the cap, big enough for three fingers.

Size and weight
This is a big bottle. It stands 26.4 cm tall and 9 cm across, and it’s listed at 520 g empty. It gets heavy when full, at nearly 1.5 kg, and it’s tall, which makes it tricky to fit into smaller backpack side pockets.
The base is tapered to fit many standard car cup holders. Even so, the 32 oz diameter can be snug, or need an adapter, depending on the vehicle.
We also have the Kathmandu Straw Lid Insulated Bottle, which is about the same size: the two are close in height and width. The Kathmandu cost $25 less, but it’s hand wash only.

Build and cleaning
The bottle is 18/8 pro-grade stainless steel with a slip-resistant powder coat finish, which gives a comfortable grip even when your hands are wet. The steel doesn’t hold on to flavours, so yesterday’s cordial doesn’t come through in today’s water. It’s tough, but not indestructible: the body can dent or chip if you drop it on a hard surface like rock or concrete.
Cleaning is easy. The wide mouth makes hand-washing simple, the cap comes apart without fuss, and both the bottle and the cap parts are top-rack dishwasher safe.
Conclusion: Hydro Flask 32 oz Wide Mouth with Flex Straw Cap
The Hydro Flask 32 oz Wide Mouth with Flex Straw Cap is a big, well-made insulated bottle. It holds 946 ml, keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours, has a fold-down straw you can use with one hand and a wide mouth that takes ice and is easy to clean. The straw cap is for cold drinks only, it gets heavy when full, and the exposed spout can pick up dust outdoors. I paid $80 for it. For the car, the camp table and everyday use, it’s a very good bottle.

Yes, if you’ll use it every day. $80 is a lot for a water bottle, but it’s one you buy once. Prices on Amazon move around and were lower than what we paid when we looked, so check before you buy.
