Kings Grand Tourer Internal Storage Pocket Review

Jump to

The Kings Grand Tourer internal storage pocket is a six-pocket organiser that velcros onto the ceiling of a hard shell rooftop tent. We bought it with our Kings Grand Tourer Lite and have used it on every trip since. If your rooftop tent doesn’t have many pockets, it’s a must-have. I paid $50 for it.

What You’re Getting

A grey ripstop canvas panel with navy binding around the edges and Velcro strips on the back. It has six pockets: a row of pleated pockets along the top for phones, keys and torches, and three bigger ones along the bottom, the middle one with a clear PVC window that takes a tablet of up to 13 inches or a magazine. It’s sold for the Kings Grand Tourer tents, but it fits any rooftop tent with a carpeted ceiling, and it weighed 296 g on our scale.

What we like

  • Six pockets on the tent ceiling
  • Clear pocket fits a 13-inch tablet
  • Velcros on, no tools needed
  • Still firmly up after a year
  • Frees up space on the mattress
  • Light at 296 g

What we don’t

  • Not the most premium material
  • Needs a ceiling Velcro can grip

Six pockets overhead

A hard shell tent like ours has few places for small things. Without the pocket, phones, torches and the tablet end up on the mattress. With it, they go up on the ceiling, within reach when you’re lying down and out of the way when you’re sleeping.

The clear pocket at the bottom is the big one. It takes a tablet of up to 13 inches, so you can lie back and watch something on the tablet without holding it, and it’s just as handy for a small fan or a map.

Fitting it with Velcro

There’s nothing to screw or drill. Strips of Velcro run along the back of the pocket and grip the carpet lining on the ceiling of the tent: press it up and it stays. That also means you can move it if you want it closer to the head end. It needs a ceiling the Velcro can grip, so it fits any rooftop tent with a carpeted ceiling, not just the Grand Tourer.

Over a year on the ceiling

The material isn’t the most premium: a simple ripstop canvas with a bound edge. But it does the job really well. Ours has been on the ceiling of the tent for over a year, through every trip and every time the tent opens and closes, and it hasn’t come loose. At 296 g it doesn’t add anything you’d notice to the lid.

Conclusion: Kings Grand Tourer Internal Storage Pocket

The Kings Grand Tourer internal storage pocket gives a hard shell rooftop tent six pockets on the ceiling, including a clear one for a tablet of up to 13 inches. It velcros onto the carpet lining without tools, and ours has stayed up for over a year. The material isn’t the most premium, but it does the job really well, and if your tent doesn’t have many pockets it’s a must-have. I paid $50.

Yes. I paid $50, and in a hard shell tent without many pockets it's the easiest way to get phones, torches and the tablet off the mattress.

FAQ: Kings Grand Tourer storage pocket

Does the storage pocket fit other rooftop tents?
Yes, as long as the ceiling is carpeted. It's sold for the Kings Grand Tourer, but it hangs on Velcro strips that grip the carpet lining, so any rooftop tent with a carpeted ceiling will do. On a smooth or canvas ceiling the Velcro has nothing to grip.
What size tablet fits in the clear pocket?
A tablet of up to 13 inches, according to Kings. Ours holds a tablet in a folio case with room to spare, and the pocket is just as handy for a magazine or a small clip-on fan.
Does the Velcro hold on the tent ceiling?
Yes. Ours has been on the ceiling of our Grand Tourer Lite for over a year, through every trip and every time the tent opens and closes, and it hasn't come loose.
Can you leave the pocket up when the tent is closed?
Yes, ours stays on the ceiling all the time and the tent closes over it. Take anything bulky out of the pockets before you pack the tent down.
How heavy is the Kings storage pocket?
It weighed 296 g on our scale, so it adds next to nothing to the lid of the tent.
