A high back camp chair is usually a big, heavy thing. The Moon Lence Outdoor Chair High Back isn’t: it has a tall back with a headrest pillow, yet it packs into a small bag and weighs about 2 kg. We took it on a trip to Bouddi National Park on the NSW Central Coast.
What’s in the box
A high back camping chair with a deep, hammock-style seat in 600D Oxford fabric, a headrest pillow pocket and back and side pockets, on an A7075 duralumin (high-strength aluminium) frame rated to 180 kg. The bottom of the frame is square, which Moon Lence says makes it more stable. The legs set to four heights, and by setting the front and back legs differently you can sit upright, lean back or lean forward. It all packs into a zip bag. It comes in beige or black; ours is black. We paid $95.

Packed size and weight
Everything packs into a zip bag of 49 × 23 × 17 cm. With the frame and seat inside, the chair weighs 2,047 g on our scale.

Setting it up
The frame and seat come out of the bag separately. The frame goes together first, then the seat goes on over the four corners. Like any frame-and-fabric chair, setting it up and taking it down takes a little practice the first few times, then it’s quick. Everything packs back into its own carry bag.

Height and angle
Each leg has a row of holes and a push pin, so you set the height by sliding the leg to the hole you want. Set all four the same for a higher or lower chair, or set the front and back legs differently to lean back or sit forward. That way it goes from a relaxed, low ground-style chair to a higher, upright seat for eating or cooking. The seat height, from the ground to where you sit, goes up in four steps: from 31 cm, low enough to sit cross-legged, to 39 cm, closer to standard camp table height for cooking or eating.

Comfort
The back is tall enough to support your head and neck, and the pillow pocket at the top takes a towel or some clothes for extra padding. The seat is a deep bucket that hangs like a hammock between the frame, so depending on the height setting, getting in and out takes a bit of core strength. There’s a pocket on each side and one on the back for a phone, sunglasses or sunscreen.
The thick fabric is good in wind and on cooler evenings, as it keeps the chill out, but on hot summer days it can feel a bit warm and sweaty.

Vs a standard camp chair
We also had our Kings Deluxe Armchair with us, a standard folding camp chair with armrests. On its highest setting the Moon Lence gives you about the same seat height as the Kings chair, but packed it’s a lot smaller: the Kings packs into a long bag, while the Moon Lence fits in a short, compact one. If you want a normal chair height without the bulk, that’s the appeal.

High Back or Portable?
We’ve also reviewed the smaller Moon Lence Portable Camping Chair, a backpacking chair. Both are rated to 180 kg and pack into a bag. The High Back gives you a tall back, a headrest pillow and adjustable legs; the Portable is lower, lighter and packs much smaller.

Conclusion: Moon Lence High Back Camping ChairConclusion
The Moon Lence High Back Camping Chair gives you a tall back and a headrest pillow in a chair that packs into a small bag and weighs about 2 kg. The legs set to four heights and three angles, the square base keeps it stable, and it’s rated to 180 kg. It’s bulkier than an ultralight chair, the deep seat takes a bit of effort to get out of, and the thick fabric can feel warm on hot days. For $95 it suits car campers, 4WD tourers and couples who want a high back chair that packs small.

Yes, if you want head support in a chair that still packs into a bag. I paid $95; for hiking, the lighter Moon Lence Portable Camping Chair packs much smaller.
