The North Face Wawona is a camp hammock that comes as a complete kit: the hammock, tree straps and carabiners, all packed into one small sack. It’s a great hammock. We’ve had ours for over a year now, and it’s a standard part of our fit-out on every trip, living on the Kaon roof shelf in the back of the Prado.
What You’re Getting
A gold and black hammock with “The North Face” printed along the edge, two webbing tree straps and two carabiners. It all packs into a gold stuff sack printed “Wawona Hammock” that’s sewn onto the hammock, so you can’t lose it. I paid about $150 for it. Packed with the straps, it weighed about 700 g on our scale.

Setting it up
Open the stuff sack and the tree straps sit inside on top of the hammock. Wrap a strap around each tree, feed it through its own end loop, and clip the carabiner at each end of the hammock into one of the loops along the strap. The row of loops lets you set the height and the tension without tying any knots.

In the hammock
It feels roomy. I’m almost 1.90 m and 90 kg, and it fits me comfortably, with enough room to share it for a lie-down. The fabric is 70D nylon with a PFC-free water-repellent finish, so a bit of moisture beads off, and the bright gold is easy to spot around a busy campsite. There’s no matching rain tarp in the kit, though, so in wet weather you need your own.

The stuff sack pocket
The stuff sack stays attached to the side of the hammock, so once it’s up, the empty sack hangs there as a pocket for your phone, a torch or a book.

It’s roomy, even for me at almost 1.90 m and 90 kg. There’s no rain tarp in the kit, it costs more than generic hammocks, and like any hammock it needs two well-spaced, strong trees.
