Not every hammock needs to cost $100 or more. This single camping hammock from Amazon cost me $30, straps and carabiners included. It feels the cheapest of the hammocks we’ve tested, but for the price, it’s pretty decent.

What You’re Getting

A black and grey 210D nylon hammock, about 1.4 × 2.75 m, with a black stuff sack sewn onto its side, two webbing tree straps with a row of loops and two carabiners. Packed into its sack with everything, it weighed 539 g on our scale, the lightest of the hammocks we’ve tested. It comes in three two-tone colours: black and grey like ours, blue and sky blue, and green and khaki.

Setting it up

The straps go around the trees and feed back through their own end loop, and the carabiner at each end of the hammock clips into a loop along the strap. Pick a loop that gives the height and sag you want, and there’s no knot to tie. It’s the same setup as on the more expensive branded hammocks, it works just as well, and the hammock is up in a few minutes. The straps and carabiners feel strong enough to hold someone of almost 100 kg without a problem.

In the hammock

It’s the fabric where you notice the price. Of all the hammocks we’ve tested, this one feels the cheapest: thinner and less substantial than the Nakie or the Mountain Designs. It’s fine to lie in, but don’t expect it to last for years. For a season of use, it’s pretty decent for the money.

The stuff sack

The stuff sack stays attached to the side of the hammock, so once it’s up, it hangs there as a pocket for a phone or a torch. Packed, the whole hammock goes into it, straps and all, and it’s the smallest and lightest of our hammocks.

Conclusion: Portable Single Camping Hammock

For $30, this is a perfectly usable single hammock. You get loop straps and carabiners that work as well as on the pricier brands, and it packs smaller and lighter than any of our other hammocks. The fabric is where the money was saved: it feels cheap and won’t last like a Nakie. If you want a hammock for a season, or a spare to keep in the pack, it’s good value.

Worth the money?Value 8.8

Yes, for $30. The fabric feels cheap and it’s made to last a season rather than years, but the straps and carabiners are as good as on the pricier hammocks.
