Not every camp light needs to be rechargeable, waterproof and bright enough to land a plane. Sometimes you just want a small light you can hang up, switch on and forget about.

The OZtrail 100 Lumen Portable Camp Light is that kind of light. I paid just $6 for it. It has white and amber LEDs, runs on three AAA batteries, and it hangs, clips or sticks almost anywhere.

Light and modes
There’s one button, in the middle of the dome, and it does everything: it steps through the three power modes and switches between white and amber. That’s why ease of use is this light’s best score. There’s nothing to learn.
The white light is the one for finding things and getting organised. At 100 lumens it isn’t bright, but under the rooftop tent or over a camp table it’s enough to see what you’re doing.

The amber light is softer and easier on the eyes once it’s dark, and it attracts fewer bugs than white. It’s the mode to leave on in the evening when you’re sitting around camp.

Hanging and mounting
This is where the light earns its keep, and the hanger and clamp are really easy to use: you can hang it up or clamp it on with one hand in a couple of seconds. On the back is a fold-out hanger that hooks over a branch, a tent loop or a carabiner. Around it are magnets, so it sticks to the car or anything else made of steel. And the back is shaped as a clip that’s made to fit a gazebo frame.

The clip also grips other things of about the same thickness. I clipped it onto a branch, and it held the light at an angle, pointing where I wanted it.

Batteries and run time
The light takes three AAA batteries, and they aren’t in the box, so add a pack when you buy it. The back cover twists off to get to the battery holder. A set gives up to 25 hours of light.
It’s not rechargeable. That means buying batteries now and then, but it also means the light always works as long as you have a few AAAs in the car.

Size, weight and build
The light is 85 mm across and fits in the palm of a hand. On my scale it weighs 112 g with the batteries in and 77 g without, so it adds next to nothing to the lighting bag. The body is a simple black plastic with a frosted dome over the LEDs.

Conclusion: OZtrail 100 Lumen Portable Camp Light
The OZtrail 100 Lumen Portable Camp Light is a cheap, simple light that’s very easy to use. One button gives you white or amber light in three power modes, and the hanger, magnets and clip mean it goes almost anywhere. At 100 lumens it won’t light a whole campsite, it isn’t rechargeable and you need to bring your own AAA batteries. For $6, it’s good value.

A $6 camp light with white and amber LEDs that hangs, clips or sticks almost anywhere.
At 100 lumens it’s for the tent or the table, not the whole campsite, and the three AAA batteries aren’t included. A good pick for campers, hikers and solo trips.

- Rooftop tents
Yes. I paid $6, and it’s hard to go wrong at that price. Buy a pack of AAA batteries with it, because they aren’t in the box.
