Sea to Summit Frontier Collapsible Bowl Review

Jump to

We have two Sea to Summit Frontier Collapsible Bowls, a Medium and a Large, and like our Detour bowls they come on every trip. They’re very compact and light, so they live in the back of the car without taking up any space. They’re a little less sturdy than the steel Detours, so we don’t eat from them, but they’re perfect for side dishes: avocado, tomatoes or a pile of sausages.

They match our orange Sea to Summit Frontier collapsible cup too.

What’s in the box

A collapsible bowl made of food-grade, heat-resistant silicone with a nylon glass-composite base, BPA free and rated from −20 to +100 °C. It won a Good Design Award (Gold). The Medium holds 680 ml and the Large 890 ml, engraved on the bases, and both fold down to 1.7 cm.

It comes in four colours: Aqua Sea, Bone White, Puffin’s Bill (orange) and Sulphur. Ours are an Aqua Sea Medium and a Puffin’s Bill Large. The bowls are also part of the Frontier UL dinnerware set, with the matching cup.

Our side-dish bowls

The Frontier is all silicone with a nylon base, which is why it’s so light, and also why it’s a little less sturdy than a steel bowl. So at camp we eat from our Detour bowls and use the Frontiers for everything on the side, like avocado salsa for the wraps, tomatoes and onion from the pan, or sausages straight off the stove.

The combination works really well. Having a bigger and a smaller Frontier is handy too: the Large for a full side dish, the Medium for a salsa or a snack.

Packs flat

Push the rim down and each bowl folds to 1.7 cm. Collapsed, the Medium sits on top of the Large, so the pair takes up almost no room. Ours live in the organiser in the back of the car with the cutlery.

Weight

On our scale the Medium weighed 63 g and the Large 79 g, almost exactly Sea to Summit’s 62 g, and a little under the 82 g listed for the Large. That’s about 30 g less than our steel Detour bowl.

Medium or Large?

We have one of each, and both are handy: the Large for a full side dish, the Medium for a salsa or a snack. They fold to the same height, and the Medium stacks on the Large.

Frontier vs Detour Bowl

We take both kinds of bowl. The steel Detour is sturdier, so it’s the one we eat from; the Frontier is lighter and folds lower, so it’s the side-dish bowl.

Conclusion: Sea to Summit Frontier Collapsible Bowl

The Sea to Summit Frontier collapsible bowl is a light, flat-packing camp bowl. The Medium holds 680 ml and the Large 890 ml, they weigh 63 and 79 g, and both fold to 1.7 cm, so they live in the back of the car without taking up space. They’re a little less sturdy than a steel bowl, so we use them for side dishes and eat from our Detour bowls, and the two together work really well. I paid $30 for the Medium and $35 for the Large.

Sea to Summit Frontier bowl questions
