Jump to

Every morning at camp starts the same way for us: water on the stove for a coffee. The Sea to Summit Detour Collapsible Pouring Pot is what we boil it in. We bought it together with the Detour Pan for our big December trip, a three-week lap from Sydney, and it’s really good quality with a decent capacity. It cost us $100.

What’s in the box

A 1.8 L pot with a 304 stainless steel base and rim and walls of food-grade silicone, so it collapses down flat. It comes with a stainless steel lid with a knob, a pouring spout in the rim, and a Click-Safe handle that folds back over the lid to hold it on when it’s packed. Like the pan, the three-ply base works on gas, induction and radiant electric stoves, and it has Sea to Summit’s lifetime guarantee.

What we like

  • Really good quality build
  • Decent 1.8 L capacity
  • Collapses flat to pack
  • Pouring spout for coffee water
  • Handle locks the lid on to pack
  • Nests inside the Detour Pan

What we don’t

  • Silicone wears if flame is too high
  • Handle lock stiffens if stored damp
  • Pricey at $100

Design and build

Pull the rim up and the silicone walls unfold into a proper pot; push it down and it’s a flat disc again. The stainless base and rim give it a solid feel, and it’s really good quality for something that folds. The pouring spout in the rim makes it easy to pour boiling water into a mug or a coffee filter without spilling.

The lid sits on the rim, and for packing the handle swings over it and locks the whole thing shut. With 1.8 litres it’s a decent capacity, more than enough for the morning coffees.

The Click-Safe handle

The handle uses the same Click-Safe lock as the Detour Pan: fold it out and it clicks into place for pouring, press the release and it folds back. One thing we’ve found with both: if they haven’t been used for a few months, the handle lock can be a bit stiff to undo. Keep the lock clean and dry before you put the pot away, and it stays easy.

Boiling water every morning

We use this pot every morning to boil water on the stove for a coffee, on the Dune single burner or the Gasmate Travelmate II. The three-ply base sits flat on the burner and spreads the heat.

The one rule is to keep the flame moderate. The walls are silicone, and if the flame is turned up so high that it licks up the sides, it can affect the silicone over time and wear it a bit. Keep it to a medium flame under the base.

Detour Pot vs Detour Pan

We bought the pot and the Detour Pan together, and they make a good pair: the pan for frying a full meal for two, the pot for boiling water. Collapsed, the pot nests inside the pan, so the two pack as one.

Conclusion: Sea to Summit Detour Collapsible Pouring Pot (1.8 L)

The Sea to Summit Detour Collapsible Pouring Pot is a really good quality 1.8 L pot with a stainless steel base and rim and silicone walls that collapse flat. It has a pouring spout, a handle that locks the lid on for packing, and it nests inside the Detour Pan. We use it every morning to boil water for coffee. Keep the flame moderate so the silicone doesn’t wear, and keep the handle lock clean and dry before storing it, or it can be stiff after a few months. At $100 it isn’t cheap, but for couples and small groups who want one pot that packs flat and lasts, it’s a great pick.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use the Sea to Summit Detour Pot on a high flame?
Keep it moderate. The base is stainless steel, but the walls are silicone, and high flames that reach up the sides can wear the silicone over time. Keep the flame under the base.
Why is the handle on my Detour Pot stiff?
If the pot hasn’t been used for a few months, the handle lock can be a bit stiff to undo. Keep the lock clean and dry before you store the pot.
Does the Detour Pot fit inside the Detour Pan?
Yes. Collapsed, the pot nests inside the Sea to Summit Detour Pan (10 inch), so the two pack as one.
Does the Sea to Summit Detour Pot work on induction?
Yes. The three-ply base works on induction, radiant electric and gas stoves.
