We have two Sea to Summit Detour Stainless Steel Collapsible Bowls, one green and one Beluga, and they come on every trip. They’re absolutely fantastic: after more than a year we’ll never get rid of them. Open, each one is a deep 915 ml bowl; collapsed, it’s a flat dish we use as a plate, and the two stack flat in the back of the car.
They match our Detour collapsible mugs too, so the whole set looks and packs the same.
What’s in the box
A bowl made from 304 high-grade stainless steel with a food-grade, heat-resistant silicone wall that folds down. It’s BPA free and won a Good Design Award. Ours is the Large, which holds 915 ml (it’s engraved on the base) and weighs 111 g on our scale; Sea to Summit lists 120 g.
It also comes in a Medium, about 665 ml, and both sizes collapse to 2.1 cm. Ours are Laurel Wreath (green) and Beluga (black); Bombay Brown is the third colour.

A bowl and a plate
This is what makes them so useful. Open, the Detour is a deep bowl for porridge in the morning, or pasta, salad or a stew at night. Collapse it and it’s a flat dish with a raised rim, which we use as a plate for whatever comes off the fire grill. So two Detours replace two bowls and two plates in the kitchen box.
The stainless steel inside keeps it sturdy when it’s full and hot, and the quality is excellent. At dinner it sits on the camp table next to a matching Detour mug.

Stacks flat in the car
Collapsed, the two bowls stack into a low pile that takes up no space in the back. Ours live in a canvas organiser on the tailgate with the rest of the kitchen gear, so they’re always packed and always there.
At the end of the day they go into the folding sink of our Sea to Summit Camp Kitchen Clean-Up Kit.

Weight and build
Our green bowl weighed 111 g on the scale, and the pair 219 g, a little under Sea to Summit’s listed 120 g each. The steel inside is what makes the Detour sturdy enough to use as a plate. There’s no lid, though: for leftovers in the fridge, our Kedisec silicone collapsible bowls come with lids.
After more than a year on every trip, ours still look and work like new.

Medium or Large?
The Detour comes in two sizes. Ours are the Large; the Medium holds about 665 ml and collapses to the same 2.1 cm, so it suits a smaller appetite or a side dish.

Detour vs Frontier Bowl
We also have two Sea to Summit Frontier collapsible bowls, a Large and a Medium, and we take both kinds. The Frontier is all silicone with a nylon base, so it’s lighter but less sturdy. We eat from the Detours and use the Frontiers for side dishes like avocado, tomatoes or sausages, and the combination works really well.

The Sea to Summit Detour collapsible bowl is the camp bowl we’d buy again. It holds 915 ml, stays sturdy with its stainless steel inside, and collapses into a flat dish that doubles as a plate. Two of them stack flat in the back of the car and match our Detour mugs. There’s no lid, and it costs more than a plastic or silicone bowl, but after more than a year on every trip, ours are still like new.
