Workpro 11-in-1 Multitool Review

Jump to

You can spend well over a hundred dollars on a multitool. Or you can spend $24 and see how far that gets you at camp. That’s what I paid for the Workpro 11-in-1, and it turned out to be a lot of tool for the money.

It has pliers, a knife and a saw that lock, a few small tools and a carabiner built into the handle, and it comes with a nylon sheath.

One note before you read on: the 11-in-1 I tested is currently unavailable on Amazon. The button on this page links to the Workpro 18-in-1, a slightly higher-spec version from the same brand that costs about $36. It adds scissors, a file, a rope cutter and a serrated knife, has a belt clip where mine has a carabiner, and weighs 275 g against 220 g.

What You’re Getting

A full-size stainless steel multitool with 11 tools, in black and grey. Folded, it’s 135 mm long and 38 mm wide, and it weighs 220 g. In the box are the tool and a black nylon sheath.

Pliers

Open the handles and you get the pliers: a long-nose tip for small things, a wider gripping section behind it for nuts and bigger bits, and a wire cutter at the base of the jaws. One of the handles also has a wire stripper. At camp, pliers are what you reach for most: pulling a stubborn tent peg, bending a bit of wire or holding something hot.

Knife and saw

The knife and the saw sit on the outside of the handles, so you can open either one without unfolding the pliers first. That makes the tool quicker to use, and it means the knife works like a normal folding knife.

Both have a liner lock. Once the blade is open, it stays open until you push the lock aside. On a saw that matters: you push and pull hard, and a blade that folds onto your fingers is the last thing you want.

I tried the saw on a dead branch, and it bit into the wood without trouble. It’s a short blade, so it’s for kindling and thin branches. For proper firewood, a folding saw like the Workpro folding camp saw is the tool to bring.

The small tools

The other end of the tool holds the small ones: a bottle opener, a can opener, a Phillips screwdriver and a slotted screwdriver. They fold out like the tools on a pocket knife. The screwdrivers are fixed, so there’s no bit holder and no way to swap in other sizes, but for a loose screw on a camp chair or a fridge slide they do the job.

What’s missing is a pair of scissors. If you use those a lot, the Workpro 18-in-1 that our button links to has them.

Carrying it

There are two ways to carry it. The nylon sheath has a flap with a press stud and goes on a belt or a bag strap. And one of the handles ends in a carabiner with a wire gate, so the tool clips straight onto a belt loop, a pack or a branch at camp, where you can find it again. The carabiner isn’t made for climbing or for carrying any real weight.

At 220 g it’s a full-size tool. That’s fine on a belt or in the car, but it’s heavy for a trouser pocket.

Conclusion: Workpro 11-in-1 Multitool

The Workpro 11-in-1 is a budget multitool that covers the jobs that come up at camp: pliers with a wire cutter, a knife and a saw that lock, two screwdrivers and openers for bottles and cans. The built-in carabiner and the nylon sheath make it easy to carry. It has no scissors and no driver bits, and at 220 g it’s not a pocket tool. For the $24 I paid, it’s great value for campers and 4WD tourers, and a good spare to keep in the car.

Worth the money?Value 9.4

Yes. I paid $24, which is very little for a multitool with locking tools and a sheath. The 11-in-1 is currently unavailable, so our button links to the Workpro 18-in-1, which costs about $36 and adds scissors and a file.
