Camp with a rooftop tent and you soon learn where the dirt comes from: shoes. You take them off at the bottom of the ladder, and then they sit in the dirt, get wet with dew or end up in the tent anyway. The Kings Universal Storage Bag gives them a home, and it’s a great bag for it. It always comes with us: we keep it in the bag on our roof shelf, and at camp it goes up next to the ladder of our rooftop tent.
What’s in the box
A light grey ripstop canvas bag with a big main pocket under a fold-over top, mesh pockets on the front, and two blue carabiners at the bottom corners. It comes rolled up in a long, thin box.
It’s not super solidly built, but for holding shoes it doesn’t need to be. The upside is that it’s very thin and packs away small: rolled up, it’s about 50 × 10 × 4 cm.

We paid $75 for a 4-pack, so about $19 a bag. That’s what our button links to, and it’s better value than buying them one at a time. If you only need one, here’s the single Kings Universal Storage Bag.

Mounting it
The top edge of the bag slides into a sail track, the same kind of channel an awning or a rooftop tent uses. On our rooftop tent, it hangs right next to the ladder. We put our shoes in it before we climb into the tent, so they stay dry and clean overnight, and no creatures can crawl into them either. For that job, it’s the perfect bag.

No sail track? The bag also has webbing straps with quick-release clips, so you can hang it from a car door, a roof rack, a bull bar or a gazebo instead.

The pockets
The main pocket is deep, with a fold-over top. It takes a pair of boots, shoes or thongs, and Kings says the bag holds up to 20 kg. The mesh pockets on the front are for small things you want at hand, like a phone, keys or hand sanitiser.

At the bottom corners are two blue carabiners, for clipping on things like a torch, a hat or a bag.
