Good storage is what keeps a 4WD tidy on a long trip: food and kit you can find without emptying a drawer, the things you use all day within reach, and dirty or bulky gear outside the cabin. Over the last year we’ve tested 12 storage bags in and on our Prado, from clear-top drawer bags to spare wheel bags and a roof bag.

How to choose 4WD and camping storage bagsHow to choose
Start with where the bag will live. In the drawers, you want clear-top bags sized to the drawer, so you can find things without unzipping every bag. For the things you grab all day, an organiser on the tailgate, awning or rooftop tent keeps them at hand. And for rubbish, wet gear or bulky bedding, a spare wheel or roof bag gets it out of the cabin.

None of the canvas bags we tested is fully waterproof: the zips aren’t sealed. For gear that has to stay dry, like electronics, documents or spare clothes, see our dry bags guide.
How we test
We buy the gear ourselves and take it on camping trips around Australia to put it to the test in real outdoor conditions, in the 4WD and at camp, and to see how it holds up over a few trips. We weigh everything on our own scale and photograph it ourselves. If we haven’t used something, we say so, and if anything fails later on, we update the review.
